Rotorua Camera Club – Bledisloe Cup winners – 2012

It was a very successful PSNZ National Convention in Invercargill for the Rotorua Camera Club. We are now the holders of the Bledisloe Cup for 2012 for the very first time! On hand to receive our trophy was Rotorua Camera Club member Russell Champness, cheered on by fellow Camera Club members Meg Lipscombe, Tracey Robinson and Katie Williams. The six images put forward to represent the Club in the Bledisloe Cup competition were:

Congratulations Meg Lipscombe – FPSNZ and Tracey Robinson – AFIAP

It is with great pleasure that we can inform everyone that Rotorua Camera Club member Meg Lipscombe has achieved her Fellowship with the Photographic Society of New Zealand (FPSNZ) with a stunning set of 18 images. Meg has worked long and hard to put together her set of prints and was on hand to receive her award at this years PSNZ National Conference held last weekend in Invercargill.

Tracey Robinson had some celebrating of her own to do as she was awarded an AFIAP (Artiste – International Federation of Photographic Art) for achieving Honours and Acceptances in overseas competitions. Tracey achieved her FPSNZ honours in 2010.

Congratulations ladies, we’re very proud to have you as members of the Rotorua Camera Club.

NEW – Workshop Night – Starts 16th May 2012

Due to lack of tutors and members participating our Digital Workshops the Rotorua Camera Club ran in previous years are no longer taking place this year. In place of this the club is going to run some informal interactive gatherings on the third Wednesday of the month starting 16th May at the Dutch Clubrooms, Tarawera Road.

This meeting will include a presentation by club member Nick Milsum who specialises in close-up insect images. Nick will tell us about the techniques he uses to create his images and there will be time for questions and answers afterwards.

Along with Nick’s presentation the evening will include discussion on Post Processing topics.

Also, the evening will include a practical exercise with instructions as follows:

There is an image to work on titled “Kauri Trees”. (If you did not receive this file on the club mail out email: webmaster@rotoruacamera.co.nz for another copy. Note the file size is 2.5MB) We would like you to have a “play” with it and bring along a small 4″ x 6″ or 5″ x 7″ print of what you come up with. You can crop it, convert to black and white, blur it, add a filter, or change it in any way you would like – let your imagination go! We will lay them all out at supper time for a fun “peoples choice”.

The Workshop Night Sub-Committee consists of club members – Meg Lipscombe, Nicky Blakely, Sue Pattle and Weiland Hartwig. They are looking for input from members as to what topics you would like to see at future workshops. Please come along with your ideas ready to add to the suggestion board. Five Ways Competition – 2012

The Five Ways competition began in the mid 1980′s, for smaller camera clubs in this area to get together to promote photography.

First mention of it in the Rotorua Camera Club minute books is in the 1985, as the Four Corners Interclub Competition. It was held and hosted by Taupo Club, involving Rotorua, Turangi, Tokoroa and Taupo Clubs.

In 1990 it became the Three Ways competition, but it is not evident from the minute books as to which club did not participate.

Over the years, the group increased in size again, to became the Four Ways Competition including Taupo, South Waikato, Te Awamutu and Rotorua Camera Clubs.

Matamata Camera Club then joined the fold, hence the birth of the 5 Ways Competition.

Cambridge Camera Club then joined the group and it was renamed the “6 Ways Competition”.

In 2011, South Waikato Camera elected not to continue with their involvement in the competition.

So here we are in 2012, and Rotorua Camera Club is hosting this years competition.

Club member, Meg Lipscombe, is co-ordinating the clubs entries for judging.

End of Year Club Meeting and Barbeque 2011

Our last club meeting for 2011 took place in December and we were lucky enough to have Craig Robertson in attendance. Craig is a local Commercial Photographer with a huge local client base. Along with judging our end of year competitions for 2011 he also gave us a presentation on his work and the nature of being a Commercial Photographer in a very competitive environment.

Our evening also included a fantastic barbeque put on by the Club with club members bringing along fantastic dishes to accompany this. It was a fantastic feast and a great way to finish off the year. This was followed by desert and the cutting of the Rotorua Camera Club 60th Birthday cake.

Just a reminder that the above exhibition will be opening at the Rotorua Museum on the 10th of December and running through till the 22nd of April 2012. Admission to the gallery is free with entry into the museum (and this is also free to Rotorua residents with proof of ID). Having recently viewed this exhibition at the Christchurch Museum I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in photography and travel. The images are stunning and the exhibition is well presented. There’s plenty of time over the next few months for you to get along and see it – so make sure you do! Changes To Club Competition Rules For End Of Year Entries

The committee discussed and agreed upon some changes and wording to the club end-of-year competition rules at the last meeting. Details of the changes will be included in the minutes that will be available to all members soon. Congratulations this month goes to Rotorua Camera Club member Carol Smyth. Carol placed 5th with her image titled ‘Young Warrior’ in the latest Canon On Line competition. Well done Carol!

Digital Manipulation Image (which can not be submitted as a print, must be an electronic file)
If submitting a set of 6 (either electronically or as prints) please remember to include the set layout of how it is to be viewed by the judge. Failure to do this will mean you set cannot be accepted.
